Leo Overturf, age 77, of Sutton, passed away Feb. 22 at York General Hospital in York.

Leo was born Oct. 25, 1940 on the homestead south of Sutton to Harry and Nellie (Knudson) Overturf. He received his education at Lakeside Country School and graduated from Sutton Public School in 1958.

On Sept. 4, 1960, he married Sandy Elfring at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton. He was self-employed as a farmer, rancher and livestock order buyer. He served in the army reserve and was a member of the Sutton American Legion. Leo was an avid hunter, fisherman, trap shooter and golfer. One of his pride and joys was taking his sons and grandkids hunting for the first time.

Over the 50 years of being a sheep order buyer, Leo made numerous lifelong friendships with the people he came in contact with through his sale barn visits. As a farmer, he grew various crops of corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa. He was a big supporter of the local 4-H livestock premium auction and Sutton FFA program. In his later years, the Overturf Cattle Company was formed through he and his sons. Leo’s passion was raising Charolais-cross cattle.

He is survived by his sons, Monte Overturf of Sutton; Mark (Charlene) Overturf of Sutton; Matt (Lori) Overturf of Johnson; daughter-in-law, Darlene Overturf of Sutton; grandchildren, Samantha (Austin) Carlson of Aurora; Shelby (fiancé Calab Kafka) of Holyoke, Colo.; Kyle (Leah) Overturf of Grand Island; Heather (fiancé Blake Erickson) of Superior; Wade Overturf of Wisner; Wyat (fiancé Maria Griess) of Sutton; Colby, Carlee, and Cassie Overturf of Johnson, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Kenley and Addie Overturf of Grand Island; sister, Shirley Eckhardt of Arizona; sister-in-law, Sheila and husband Delary Hofmann of Sutton; sister-in-law, Kathy Elfring of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Jerry Elfring and wife LaVonne of Lincoln; special friend, Kathy Wirsen of Kennard and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
