Tom was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. Although his father was an aeronautical engineer, he passed on an interest in trains to Tom. They not only watched the skies but what moved on the rails. After high school, Tom attended Wichita State, then Kansas University where he graduated in 1968 with a degree in astronomy. But it would be trains that took him to Denver to begin his career with Union Pacific there, later transferring to the Omaha headquarters in 1970. In the early 1970’s he purchased a farm near Council Bluffs, where he then lived. A friend invited Tom to go with him to Woodbine to visit a pastor—the pastor of the church Patti attended! Tom soon sold his farm and moved to Woodbine. In 1976, he and Patti were married. The commuting to Omaha to work at Union Pacific brought another move back to Council Bluffs in 1978, followed by the birth of Toby in 1979.

Serving in church was a big part of Tom’s life: whether teaching God’s Word in home Bible studies or helping in church leadership, Tom’s heart was to serve. This led to his decision to retire from Union Pacific and become part of the staff at Lord of Hosts Church in 2003.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Obed T. and Evelyn Wells. He is survived by his wife, Patti Wells; son, Obed T.“Toby” Wells, VI (Lisa); grandchildren, Kittrick and Maisie; sisters, Annette Schmidt (Jim) and Gail Reynolds (Lloyd); brother, Paul Wells (Donna); nieces and nephews.
