#1-Published in the Blair Pilot October 26, 1927

Grandmother Lallman, who died at her home three miles east of Fontanelle on Thursday afternoon, October 20, was the last surviving member of the Wilkening family, who were among the earliest pioneers in this community. She was born on November 8th, 1849, in Lindhorst Westphalia, Germany from where she emigrated with her parents to Quincy, Illinois, at the age of 4 years. In 1857, the family came overland in a covered wagon across the prairies of Iowa to then already established Fontanelle colony where they took possession of a choice farm south of the thriving village of Fontanelle after a brief residence in the town.

On May 13, 1870, she was untied in marriage to August Lallman who had a home prepared for her on the farm on which they resided continuously since. Six children were born to their union of who two, one son and one daughter preceded the mother in death. The surviving children are Mrs. Emma Holtman, Willian, Mary and Albert Lallman, all of Arlington, Nebr.

The deceased was always known as a kind and loving mother devoted to her home and family. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church having been confirmed in her faith by the late Rev. J. F. Kuhlman in the local church on June 18th, 1865.

Her remains were laid to rest in the family lot near the church amid the participation of a large circle of sorrowing relatives and friends on Sunday afternoon. Rev. John Hiltner, of Midland College preached the funeral sermon and a quartette composed of Mrs. A. H. Strenger, Miss Leah Niebaum, Lawrence Niebaum and Gilbert Ruwe furnished the vocal music for the occasion. Six of her nephews and sons of the late Edward Lallman acted as pallbearers. They were William and Herman Lallman, of Winslow, Henry Lallman, of Beemer, Emil Lallman, of Nickerson and Cecil and Gilbert of Lallman, of Arlington. The floral tributes were very profuse and beautiful and showed the esteem in which the deceased was held by her large circle of relatives and friends.

Mrs. August Lallman, a pioneer resident of eastern Nebraska who first came west as child in a covered wagon, died at her home three miles east of Fontanelle last Thursday afternoon after a short illness. She was the last surviving member of the well-known Wilkening family who were among the earliest settlers of this community.

The family at first located in Quincy, Ill., but in 1857 they journeyed overland with the colony that settled at Fontanelle. Here they took up a homestead east of the village of Fontanelle after having lived in that village for a short time.

The deceased had lived the greater part of her life in Washington county and had a wide acquaintance over the western part of the county. She leaves to mourn her loss, besides her aged husband, two sons, William and Albert and two daughters, Mrs. Emma Holtman and Mary Lillian all of Arlington.
