Joseph Allen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Armstrong, at 4:40 last Friday afternoon from the effects of a tumor back of the left eye. The funeral will not be held until tomorrow at 2 o’clock as they are waiting for his son, George, of Ridgway, Colo. Rev. W. H. Underwood will have charge at the Methodist Church.

Deceased was born in Glasgow, Scotland, of Scotch-Irish parents, Sept. 2nd, 1842, and was therefore, nearing his 77th birthday. He came to this country with his parents when a boy and settled in Indiana, not far from Indianapolis, where he grew to manhood.

He was married there to Miss Martha George March 24, 1864. Four children were born to them, one daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, and three sons, George, of Ridgway, Colo, W. S. of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Cicero, who died about two years ago at Sidney, Nebr. He came to this state in about 1868 and settled upon a homestead seven miles northwest of Blair in the Summers School district, where his wife died June 5th, 1878. He was later married and his second wife died five or six years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his son, Scott, and daughter Mrs. Armstrong, having been here for the past two years.

About five years ago he had a tumor as large as a hen’s egg taken out from the back of his left eye and the eye seemed to be all right for some three years. It then began to pain him and he never knew a moment’s release from suffering in that length of time. Only his wonderfully vigorous constitution kept him alive so long.

Besides the three children he leaves three grandchildren. He leaves one sister, Mrs. William Wilkins, and three brothers, Andy, of this city, James of Craig, and Robert, of Ouray, Colo. All but the later will be present at the funeral tomorrow. Mr. Allen lived at Ouray, Colo., for several years, where he and George were in business. He was a good husband, father, citizen and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
