Anna C. Fitzgerald, 99

Anna C. Fitzgerald, 99, of the Garryowen area of Washington County, died at her home on Sunday, March 11, 2001. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on March 14 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. Interment was at Holy Sepulcher in Omaha.

Anna C. Fitzgerald was born Nov. 24, 1901, in Omaha. Educated in Omaha at Sacred Heart School, she became a teacher in public school District #42 in Platte County, and later in Humphrey. She came to Garryowen to teach at District #9 in the fall of 1924, and again in 1926. It was at that time that she married John Fitzgerald, whose grandparents were among the original Irish immigrants who homesteaded in the Garryowen area.

The couple lived, farmed and raised their family of nine in the Garryowen area. They were active in many county, community and church affairs.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun for nearly 76 years. She held the distinction of being the oldest member of the parish.

She had many interests and hobbies. These included traveling, sewing, doll making, crocheting, knitting, reading, playing word games and working crossword puzzles. She enjoyed visiting and celebrating with her many friends, relatives and neighbors, including her 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by John and wife Margaret of Fort Calhoun, Mary Ann and husband Frances Dillon of Gretna, Terence and wife Martha, Thomas and wife Linda, Sheila, Sinsinawa Dominican Sister, Patricia Miller, and Margaret and husband James Townley, all of the Garryowen area of Washington County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1951, and two sons, Daniel and Michael.

Memorials are suggested to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, and Poor Clare Sisters.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.
