SERVICES HELD FOR MARY BRACKEN

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun for Mary Helen Bracken, 89, of Blair who died April 11, 1983. Burial is in the Blair Cemetery.

Mary Helen Bracken was born in Blair on August 12, 1894. She attended the Blair Schools and acquired her teacher's certificate at Wayne College.

She started her teaching career in the Orum Schools and went from there to the Fort Calhoun Schools and then to the Omaha Public Schools. She ended her teaching career in Omaha as the principal of Comenius and Vinton Grade Schools.

On her retirement from the Omaha Public Schools, she acquired a certificate from the Library of Congress to transcribe Braille. She transcribed themes for blind students at the University of Omaha (University of Nebraska at Omaha) with a braille typewriter. She performed this service free of charge until her eyesight became too poor to do it efficiently.

She lived alone at her home in Omaha after the death of two sisters in a fire in 1963. In 1978, she came to live at Good Shepherd Home until her death.

She is survived by nephews, Charles Sylvis and Robert Sylvis of Blair; and a niece, Helen Clark Maynard of Omaha. James Bracken of Beaumont, California; and other nieces and nephews across the country also survive her.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the services.
