John George Frederick Brand, who died at the Fremont hospital on Saturday evening following a surgical operation for abdominal tumor was born in Wurtenberg, Germany, on October 10th, 1840. At the tender age of six years he emigrated to America with his parents and temporarily moved to Washington, Ill. He was married to Miss Caroline Slack on January 7th, 1864. To this union nine children were born, three of whom preceded their father to the great beyond. The mother of these children died on June 25, 1880. On September 2, 1880, he was married to Miss Nancy Eggman. Six children were born to this union of whom two beside the mourning widow survive their father.

He moved to Nebraska with his family in 1883 and established his residence in Fontanelle where by his faithful and honest endeavors he has prospered up to the time of his death. The close surviving relatives are his widow and the following: Mrs. Lee Johnson, Ames, Neb., George Brand, Tekamah, Neb., Henry, Edward and Frank Brand, of this community, Robert Brand, Arlington, Mrs. Mathilda Richards, of Fremont, and Mrs. Rosa Jensen, of Bridgeport, Neb. Besides the children there are 38 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The funeral services were held from the local Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. F. C. Schuldt officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the cemetery near the church.
