Teacher Killed In Car Accident

Miss Frances Wright Is Victim of Train-Auto Collision

Miss Frances Wright, 23 year old third grade instructor at the Joy Elementary School here, was killed instantly and her companion, Loren E. Klatt, 27, a bookkeeper employed by the Wincharger Corporation in Sioux City, was injured critically Thursday morning when their automobile collided with a Burlington railroad passenger train at a grade crossing on Highway 20 on the outskirts of Laurel, Neb., 41 miles southwest of here.

Funeral services for Miss Wright will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church. Rev. G. W. Dunn will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery at Kennard, Neb., under the directory of the Westcott-Doughty-Chandler Funeral Home.

Klatt, who was driving the car, evidently did not see the gasoline powered train approaching the crossing, authorities, who investigated the accident concluded. Klatt and the body of Miss Wright were hurled more than 75 feet from the scene of the crash to the side of the road. The engine was ripped from the car and tossed 100 feet away. The train was bound for O'Neill from Sioux City.

Miss Wright and Mr. Klatt were driving to Creighton, Neb., to visit Miss Wright's sister, Mrs. Phyllis Jorgensen. They left here Thursday morning.

Dr. R. T. Carroll, summoned by the train crew which picked up Klatt and the body of Miss Wright, said the Sioux City teacher died instantly of a broken back, a fractured skull and internal injuries. Mr. Klatt was brought to St. Joseph's Hospital here in a Solso ambulance, Dr. W. E. Cody, who performed an emergency operation on the victim; said Mr. Klatt suffered a fractured skull and possibly internal injuries. A blood transfusion was given Thursday afternoon.

Miss Wright was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright, 805 Seventh Street. Mr. Klatt lived here at 719 Jones Street.

Before coming to Sioux City to teach, Miss Wright had taught two years at Jefferson S.,D., and one year at Valley Springs, S.D. In addition to her duties as instructor, Miss Wright was building music supervisor. She attended the Laurel, Neb. High School and, after graduation, matriculated at Wayne State Teachers College where she obtained a degree. She was born August 3, 1916, at Correctionville. The parents and Mrs. Jorgensen survive.

BURY CRASH VICTIM IN

Frances Helen Wright, 23 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Wright of Sioux City, Iowa, was killed near Laurel, Nebraska the morning of July 4 when the car in which she was driving with Loren E. Klatt, also of Sioux City, struck a train. Burial services were held in Kennard Saturday morning with Rev. David Simpson officiating.

Miss Wright, who has several relatives in this county, was third grade teacher and music supervisor at the Joy school in Morningside at the time of her death, and ranked a the youngest member of the Sioux City faculty.
