Opal Wright Dies At Kennard Sunday

Had Been Ill With Spinal Meningitis for Ten Days

The people of Kennard and vicinity are mourning the passing away of Miss Opal Wright at her home in Kennard Sunday morning after a ten days illness of spinal meningitis contracted while teaching at the Mapleton, Iowa high school. The deceased was born at Herman, June 6, 1905, and the following year she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wright to Kennard.

She grew to womanhood at Kennard and was endeared to everyone by her friendliness and cheerfulness, counting her friends by her acquaintances wherever her work or social duties called her. She was a graduate of the Kennard high school and of the University of Nebraska. For three years she taught in the Washington county schools and had begun her second year's work in the Mapleton, Iowa, High School. She had been a teacher in the Kennard Methodist Sunday school for a number of years.

Surviving her besides her bereaved parents are her grandmother, Mrs. Ida Wright, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Kennard Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. McMalen of Lincoln officiating. Burial was in the Kennard cemetery.

OPAL WRIGHT DIES AT KENNARD HOME

Miss Opal Wright, 25, died at her home at 11 a.m., Sunday after a ten day illness with spinal meningitis contracted while teaching at the Mapleton, Ia. high school.

She was born at Herman June 6, 1905, coming to Kennard with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wright, the following year, and has made Kennard her home since. She was a graduate of the Kennard high school and of the University of Nebraska. She taught for three years in the schools of Washington county and had begun her second year of teaching in the Mapleton, Ia. high school when stricken with illness September 11.

She became a member of the Episcopal church while a student at the University of Nebraska and was a former teacher in the Methodist Sunday school here. She was also a member of McKinley Chapter, O. E. S. of Blair.

She is survived by her parents, her aged grandmother, Mrs. Ida Wright of this place, and other relatives.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 24 from the Wright home with burial in the Kennard cemetery.

Funeral services for Miss Opal T. Wright, 25, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wright of Kennard, were held Thursday afternoon at Kennard. Rev. L W. McMillen of the University Episcopal Church of Lincoln officiated at the brief services held at the home at one o'clock followed by a ceremony at the Methodist church. Interment was in the Kennard cemetery.

Miss Opal T. Wright was born June 6, 1905 at Herman, Nebr. She lived in Kennard 1907-1909 and spent the next seven years of her life at Maskell. Her home has been in Kennard since 1910.

She was graduated from Kennard - high school in 1923, and taught school near Arlington for the next two years.

She was a graduate of the Fine Arts College of the University of Nebraska with the Class of 1929 and was very active in campus affairs.

Her University affiliations included: Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Theta sorority of which she was president in her senior year; Alpha Delta Theta Alumnae Association of which she was president last year, the University Players; Y. W.C. A. Staff, and Tassels.

She was a member of the University Episcopal Church of Lincoln where she was confirmed Feb. 20, 1927 and was a regular communicant while there; member of the McKinley Chapter of the Eastern Star of Blair: the Royal Neighbors of Kennard and a Sunday School teacher in the Methodist Church of Kennard for many years.

Miss Opal F. Wright passed away at 11 o'clock Sunday morning following an illness of ten days. She was stricken suddenly at Mapleton, Ia.. where she had commenced her second year as English Dramatics instructor in the high school.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wright of Kennard. her fiancé, Joseph J. Gallagher of Kearney, her grandmother, Mrs. Ida M. Wright of Kennard and many other relatives.
