Marilyn Jean Smith age 77, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Marilyn was born October 1, 1940, in the Loess Hills near Mondamin, Iowa, to Henry and Mildred (Withem) Godden. She graduated from Mondamin High School in 1958.

In 1958, she worked in Omaha. Marilyn was first woman police officer in Missouri Valley for 13 years, and served as interim chief. Marilyn worked at the Logan Detention Center and part time at Foodland in Missouri Valley for many years, until she retired. She was a good mother who had three children. Marilyn enjoyed music, gardening, and her pets.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Mildred Godden, and her sister Elena Spencer.

Survivors include her three children Danny Tobin of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Tina Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Steve (Theresa) Tobin of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren Benjamin, Steven Jr., and Jeffery Tobin; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers Norman (Genee) Godden of Carmel, Indiana and Denny (Patty) Godden of Carlton, Missouri.

Interment will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Calhoun Cemetery in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
