John Mills Allen
Died on 3/14/1895
Buried in Allen (Pioneer Memorial) Cemetery

1) March 21, 1895- The Pilot

John Allen, aged eighty-four years, died at the home of his son, W.H. Allen nine miles southeast of town last Thursday.

Mr. Allen was born in Virginia, but was one of the earliest settlers in Washington County, having resided here something like thirty-five years. He was the father of four children, three of whom are now living as follows, W.H., and Milt Allen and Mrs. Wm. Swihart. The funeral services were held at the home of his son at eleven o’clock last Saturday and the remains were interred in the Allen cemetery. Rev. Butts, of Kennard preached the funeral sermon.

2) John M. Allen came to Nebraska Territory with his wife, Mary (Camerer), and their four children in May of 1856. He acquired bounty land and settled in the hills west of Fort Calhoun.

The Allen Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, located on the original bounty land site, stands as a tribute to them. Today many of John's descendants still live Washington and surrounding counties and part of the original land remains in the hands of their descendants.

Note: Although his tombstone gives John's date of birth as Dec 1810, that is unlikely for there is strong evidence supported by multiple census records & the birth of a sibling in Feb 1811, that indicate he was probably born in either 1812 or 1813.
