Carl was a graduate of Lynch High School, Nebraska Wesleyan University, and the University of Nebraska. He was an innovative educator and tutor; Gold Life Master bridge player; music lover, pianist, chorister, barbershop singer; volunteer for Meals on Wheels; consummate gardener; road tripper, surprise visitor; recreational athlete (especially volleyball, racquetball and softball); reader, writer and philosopher (forever asking the unanswerable questions).

He leaves to celebrate his life his wife, Carol (Robinson) Spencer; his children Dave (Pat) Spencer, Terri (Scott) Douglass, Steve (Shauna) Spencer, Craig (Dawn) Spencer, Ashley (Jon) Buller, Chesley Spencer, and Alex Spencer; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; his sister Joyce Richards (Victor) Dye; his former wife, Lenore (Sandfort) Spencer; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends from all walks of his life.

Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Audrey Spencer, brother Chester, and brother-in-law John Richards. His daughter Heather Hiskey (Jim Farren) passed away shortly after his death.
