On Saturday there was a funeral out here in the County, one mile northeast of the city of Washington. It was one of the Danish settlers, Peter Rasmussen, who died. He was born in Horn, Denmark, Sept. 8, 1849. About 40 years ago, he emigrated to America and settled shortly after his arrival in this country at the place where he lived until his death, Dec. 11, 1918.
Peter Rasmussen's first wife died in 1889 and left him a son, Rasmus Rasmussen, and a daughter, now married to Chr. Hansen and living in Washington Co. In 1895 he married Anne Knudsen, whom he leaves with four daughters. (Maria, Anna. May and Petra) and two sons (Knud and Peter). All 8 children with the widow were present at the funeral.
As there is currently no Danish priest in Kennard, the Editor of the Danish Christian Journal conducted the funeral at the request of the family. He spoke from John 5:24. An American choir from Washington sang three numbers for us in the house.
Peter Rasmussen was a respected and beloved man, and a man willing to serve, to whom the large crowd of mourners gave testimony. May God comfort those who mourn the loss of a loving husband and father!
