John D. Abbott was born April 23, 1945 at Shelby Hospital in Shelby, Neb., to Derold D. “Bud” and Lois Ann Abbott. He entered into rest at Carter Place in Blair on July 12, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

John D. attended Shelby High School, Class of 1963, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in 1968 with a BA in Business Administration.

He married Connie Jo Dunning of Shelby, on Nov. 20, 1965. The family grew to include Bradley James in 1972 and Tyrell Lynn in 1974, and many special pets throughout the years.

John D. proudly served his country with the Army National Guard from 1968 to 1975.

He taught high school business in Alliance, before moving to Blair in 1970, where they lived for the rest of his life. This life included careers as a teacher for four years at Blair High School, a comptroller at Interstate Harvestore, a Washington County Bank loan officer and insurance sales for 30 years. His many clients became his personal friends.

John D. enjoyed golfing, gambling with friends, coffee with the boys and traveling, especially to Estes Park, Colo., in the fall to see the elk and the turning of the Aspen trees.

He was heavily involved with the community of Blair, including Little League, American Legion, Blair City Council, Metropolitan Area Planning Association (MAPA) and National Association of Regional Councils (NARC).

John D. was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Douglas Dean Abbott. He is survived by Connie, his wife of 52 years; his children, Bradley James (Heather) Abbott of Elkhorn, Tyrell Lynn Abbott of Blair; and grandchildren, Asia Alston, Ambrosia Alston, Matthew Meredith, Ethan Abbott and Madelyn Abbott; and his beloved feline, Sheldon.

Celebration of Life Open House will take place Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at Saint Francis Borgia Catholic Church Social Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. , a light lunch will be served.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for later distribution to local groups and charities.
