Letitia (Lettia) Contal

Mrs. Lettie Contal Dies in Canada

Mrs. Lettie Contal, widow of the late Captain Benjamin Contal, died last Wednesday, March 28, 1918, at the home of her niece, Mrs. Lettie Lan, of Smith Falls, Canada. Mrs. Contal was a pioneer of Washington County and for many years lived with her first husband, J. Sheppherd, on Bell Creek. She married Capt. Contal after the death of her first husband and they lived in Blair for the last thirty years. Mrs. Contal leaves on granddaughter, Mrs. Charley Chittum of Rushville, Nebr., two step-sons and other distant relatives to mourn her death. She spent the winter in Smith Falls, Canada, where she was born and spent her girlhood days, and here she passed peacefully away. It was her desire that she be buried there, so her wishes were carried out and she was laid to rest near the graves of relatives who had preceded her to the Great Beyond.

~The Vig Files at the Danish American Archives record her first name as Letitia and this is the name used on her marriage licence on December 17, 1872. She was born in 1833. Vig Files also record the spelling of her first husband's last name Shephard
