Richard L. "Dick" Lowe
Died on 7/27/2017
Buried in Herman Cemetery

#1-Published in the Pilot-Tribune July 31, 2018

Dick Lowe, 82, of Oakland passed away Friday, July 27, 2018, at his home in Oakland after a long illness.

Dick was born to Gus and Babe Lowe on Feb. 18, 1936, in Herman. He graduated from Herman High School. He formed lifelong friendships in Herman and attended the Herman Alumni Banquet faithfully each year. He grew up playing baseball, ice skating, hunting and hanging out with his buddies.

He married Shirley Petersen on May 8, 1955, in Blair. The couple was married for 63 years. They had three children: Vicki, Gordie and Mike. Family was the most important part of Dick’s life. He attended all the ball games, concerts and celebrations of his children, and later his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, first as a young boy growing up, and later taking his young family each summer. He was also able to take some of his grandchildren to the same resort and continue this long tradition.

Dick was a hard worker his whole life and loved working with his hands. He built numerous homes, and later in life, he enjoyed fixing up old houses, to resell or rent. Anyone who knew Dick knew he had a great sense of humor. Even when he was in the hospital, he soon had the nurses laughing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his special cousin, Rosemary Spencer, who was like a sister to him while growing up.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; brother-in-law, Bob (Colleeta) Petersen of Blair; children, Vicki (Jeff) Nelson of Oakland, Gordie (Janet) Lowe of Morse Bluff, Mike (Angie) Lowe of Arlington; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; special nephews, Kent Petersen and Greg Petersen; and special nieces, Lori Wilburn and Tami Thompson.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2018, 10:30 a.m., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland. Visitation is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at the Herman cemetery.

Almighty God,
as we play through our 18 holes of life,
we pray that You will give us a drive that’s
both long enough to reach our goals,
and yet straight enough to keep us out of trouble.

Help us avoid the traps and hazards of life.
Nevertheless, should we find ourselves in them,
give us the tools, skills, and desire to escape them with no
penalty. May we always stay within bounds.

Help us to be willing to stand by—and not play through—
those in genuine need. May we always play with honor.

And finally, when we’ve putted out on the 18th green, we
pray that we will have demonstrated the integrity of our
character, so that You will judge us worthy enough to join
Your threesome and play eternally on Your Heavenly course.

Amen.
