Daniel Osmer Hibbard

Published in the Pilot October 12, 1921

Word has been received here of the death of D. O. Hibbard, formerly superintendent of the Blair city schools, at the home of son, C. V. Hibbard at Hastings on the Hudson, New York, who, by the way, is international secretary of the Y.M.C.A., on September 28th. The body was taken to his old home at Albion, Wis., for the funeral and burial services on the 30th.

He was born in New York state and was about 71 years of age. His wife died a few years ago. He is survived by three sons, C. V., Darrell, who is in Y.M.C.A. work in Athens, Greece, and Clarence, who is professor of English at Chapel Hill, N. C.

Mr. Hibbard went to Wisconsin when a young man and was graduated from Milton Wisconsin College. He was made principal of the Hanes School in Racine and after a few years came west to Blair to accept the superintendency of our city schools, hoping the change would be good for his health. When the new Lincoln School building was erected in Racine he was called back to become its principal and remained at this position for over twenty-five years, retiring only three years ago. He was president of the Y.M.C.A. in Racine and a prominent member of the First Congregational Church.

The notice of his death in the Racine Journal closed as follows: “Mr. Hibbard was not only a highly educated man, but also a courteous and lovable gentleman. He was very thorough in his work as a principal. By the many teachers under him he was held in the very highest esteem and of the hundreds of children educated in the places of learning where he was employed, scores of them have grown to womanhood and man hood, and are numbered among the leaders in social and church circles, as well as in the commercial houses and manufacturing institutions. In every sense of the word he was a Christian and his whole life was practically spent in the uplifting of the people of the community where he lived in so many ways.”
