Jochim Micheel

#1-Published in the Pilot October 26, 1921

Jochim Micheel was found dead in his kitchen at about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon by Chester Walrath, who went to the house on West Lincoln Street to read the gas meter. He had evidently been dead since Friday for mail postmarked that day had not been taken from the mailbox. He had evidently had been sitting on a chair by the window and was suddenly seized with heart failure. He had fallen forward on the floor and death came without a struggle. He was getting a meal and the gas burner was still going under the tea kettle.

The funeral will be held at the residence, formerly the Nels Truhlsen place, at 1 o’clock tomorrow, Thursday, and the body will be taken to the German Cemetery in Richland Township for burial. He was 72 years old last August and was born in Germany, coming to this country when 29 years of age. He was never married. He owned and worked a farm near the Frank Jahnel place, about six miles southwest of Blair, for many years, selling in about two years ago. It is now owned by Robert Anderson. He came to Blair to live a year ago last May. His only near relative in the country is Mrs. Marx Lamp, of Bennington, a sister.

JOACHIM MICHEEL

On Tuesday afternoon as the Blair Gas Co’s man made his rounds reading the meters, he discovered Joachim Micheel dead. He immediately reported the discovery and the proper authorities were notified.

From all indications he had been dead several days. The mail in the box had not been gathered since last Friday, and the neighbors had not seen him about since that date. That death came suddenly was evidenced by the fact that he apparently had fallen from a chair near the gas stove as he was getting a meal.

He had lived alone practically all his life, having owned and worked a farm seven miles south of Blair for many years. Recently he sold the farm and came to Blair, buying the Nels Truhlsen property on west Lincoln street.

Deceased was born in Germany, coming to this county when at the age of 29 years. He was seventy two years of age at his death. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Marx Lamp of Bennington, and a cousin, Mr. William Micheel of Kennard as near relatives.

The funeral was held today at 1 p.m., and interment made in the German cemetery in Richland township.

JOCHIM MICHEEL FOUND DEAD AT HIS HOME IN THIS CITY

On Tuesday afternoon when Chester Walwrath went to the home of Jochim Micheel to read the gas meter, he was horrified to find the man dead in his kitchen.

On the gas stove over a feeble blaze was a kettle which had boiled dry and other evidences of the preparation of a meal were seen. Vegetables had been prepared and stood on a table. Mr. Micheel lived alone and did his own house work.

An examination of his mailbox showed that he had not taken out his mail since early Friday of last week, and the supposition is that he died as early as that day. He was sitting by a window and had fallen to the floor with one arm across his breast as though in pain, and as medicine for heart trouble was found in the pantry, it is presumed that he had attacks of heart trouble.

Jochim Micheel was born in Germany seventy two years ago, and came to Blair when he was twenty nine years old. He bought a farm near the Frank Jahnel place, where he lived until two years ago when he sold the farm and purchased the Nels Truhlsen place in Blair. The farm is now occupied by Robert Anderson and is one of the best in the country. Mr. Micheel was never married and has but one relative in this country, Mrs. Marx Lamp of Bennington, who is a sister. A brother died in Germany two years ago.

Deceased had considerable personal property, a mortgage of $13,000 being among his papers, besides government bonds and ready money.

The funeral is to be held from his late home on Friday, and burial will be made in the German cemetery.
