Mrs. Fred Metzler died at her home on the farm nine miles north of Blair last Wednesday, June 8th, and the funeral was held at the home of her brother, Oscar Mathews, in this city at 2 o’clock, Saturday, June 11th, Rev. W. H. Underwood officiating. Mrs. Metzler had smallpox last winter and had not been well since. Leakage of the heart developed and despite every effort she gradually failed, the end coming peacefully last Wednesday.

Maude Mathews was born near Kinsley, Kansas, November 14th, 1886, and was, therefore 34 years of age last November. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Mathews, of this city, moved to this county when she was but a child and she grew to womanhood here, attending the public schools and up to the junior year in high school, when she was married to Fred Metzler, March 14th, 1906. Two children were born to them, Geraldine, aged 14, and Harold, aged 11. Besides the husband, children, and parents she leaves three sisters and five brothers to mourn her early demise: Mrs. Morris Kindred, of Florence; Mrs. Harry White, of Omaha and Miss Etta Matthews, who teaches in the Omaha Public Schools; T. L. of Florence, H. W. of Homer, Neb., J. E. of Kearney, Mo., Oscar, of Blair and J. D. lives in Canada. The bereaved families have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

Mrs. Fred Metzler, living on a farm north of Blair, died at her home on last Thursday.

Miss Maude Mathews was born in Kansas Thirty five years ago, and while yet a babe she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Mathews to this county where her life was lived.

She received her education in the public schools, and it was while in school that she made the acquaintance of Mr. Metzler who she afterwards married some fifteen years ago.

To this union was born two children, Geraldine, aged fourteen and Harold, aged eleven. The husband and the two children, with her parents, three sisters and five brothers survive her to mourn her loss. The parents have long resided in this city. Of the sisters, Laura, the wife of Morris Kindred, resides in Florence, Neb.; Attais, the wife of Harry White of Omaha; Miss Etta, a teacher of Omaha; one brother, T. L. lives in Florence, Neb.; H. L. lives in Homer, Neb.; J. E. in Kearney, Mo.; Oscar in Blair and J. D. in Canada.

When the smallpox epidemic broke out last winter, Mrs. Metzler was one of the sufferers, and she never fully recovered and has been a sufferer until her death.

She was a woman of sweet disposition and kindly ways, a good mother and a good wife, and the sympathy of the friends goes out to the family in their bereavement.

The funeral services were held at the home of her brother, Mr. Oscar Mathews of this city, on last Saturday afternoon, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

MRS. FRED METZLER HAS RECEIVED THE FINAL SUMMONS

Mrs. Fred Metzler died at the family home Thursday morning at 10 o’clock after a protracted illness, aged 35 years.

Maude Mathews was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Mathews of this city, and came with her parents, brothers and sisters to Washington county when a small child. She was reared on a farm between Blair and Herman and nearly sixteen years ago was married to Fred Metzler.

Last winter Mrs. Metzler had smallpox and the disease did not come to the surface as it should, and since that time she has been very poorly, and heart trouble finally developed, causing her demise.

There survives to mourn the death of this fine young woman her husband, two children, Geraldine, 14 years of age, Harold, 11; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Mathews living in Blair; five brothers, Oscar of Blair; Thornton of Florence; Henry residing in the western part of the state; Edgar living in Missouri and Burtis of Canada; three sisters, Mrs. Morris Kindred and Mrs. Harry White of Omaha and Miss Etta Mathews of Blair.

The body was brought to the home of her brother, Oscar Mathews where the funeral was held on Saturday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Underwood preaching the sermon and burial was made in the Blair cemetery.
