Former Missouri Valley, Iowa, resident Alyce E. Brougton, 86, of Blair, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia, Iowa. Pastor Todd Schave will officiate.

Alyce E. Broughton was born May 25, 1915, in Missouri Valley to Charles and Abbye (Shacklett) Losh.

She married Calvin Broughton in 1940. At the time of their marriage, they were 25 and 26. The couple farmed their entire lives until they moved to town in 1972.

Mrs. Broughton worked tirelessly, cooking large meals without blinking an eye. She butchered her own chickens and sold eggs, and tended to a huge garden. She had quite a green thumb, and canned some of the best vegetables. Two of the things she was most well known for were her pickles and her cookie cakes; everyone loved them. She always found time to teach Sunday school, be a 4-H leader, help her husband in the fields and with the animals. The couple loved to play cards and did so at many neighbors' homes, or at their own home. As a mother, she was always willing to let her daughter have a slumber party, where she would cook a feast and let the kids make a mess baking cookies of some sort of project.

Mrs. Broughton was blessed by becoming a grandmother at the age of 70. She never missed a birthday party or any event, she just loved being a grandmother. This past year, she taught her granddaughter how to make her famous cookie cake, and worried about her grandson being safe while in the Navy.

She was fiercely independent, and taking care of herself was very important her. As her health started to fail, she was not able to do thing she wanted, such as going to church or even grocery shopping.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Brian Fuhlrodt of Blair, two grandchildren, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, sister, Dott, and brothers, Clarence and Bud.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Blair, or the Blair Rescue Squad.

Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
