Joseph Arthur Chapman, age 88, passed away Dec. 11, 2018, at Tekamah Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tekamah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at Hillside Christian Church in Blair. Graveside service will follow in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 13, with the family receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Masonic service will begin at 7 p.m.

Joe was born on April 25, 1930, in Wymore, the son of Joseph I. and Goldie Chapman. He attended Wymore High School where he participated in football, track and music. After his high school graduation, he attended and graduated from Doane University. He earned his master's degree in music from the University of Northern Colorado. Joe spent 19 years of his teaching career at Tekamah-Herman Schools. He also taught in Bassett, Shickley and Onawa, Iowa. He also spent two years developing an orchestra program for the government of Guam.

Joe served with many organizations including the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, American School Band Directors Association and Doane Alumni Council. He received many awards including: Dr. Henzlik Award as Outstanding Male Senior High Teacher in Nebraska in 1973; Donald A. Lentz Award as Outstanding Band Director in Nebraska in 1989; Master Teacher Award from the Omaha World-Herald in 1989; he was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame for Music Educators in 1995; Doane College Outstanding Alumni Educator Award in 1992; Doane College Outstanding Alumni Music Educator Award in 1992; Honor D Award from Doane College in 1997; Washington County Volunteer of the Year in 1999; and Paul Kersenbrock Humanitarian Award from Doane College in 2001.

Joe was the organizer and first director of the Blair Area Community Band, he played with the "T-Bones" in Tekamah, Tangier Shrine Band in Omaha and Civil War Band in Fremont.

Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Tekamah; children, Paula (Vic) Coston and Angela (Dan) Walter; step-children, Greg (Kristen) Lehl and Brad (Kim) Lehl; grandchildren, Katlynn (Zach) Weston, Nic (Madison) Coston, Lindsay Walter and Gabe Walter; step-grandchildren, Jack Lehl, Adam Lehl, Elizabeth Lehl, William Lehl, Michael Lehl and Angeline Lehl; great-grandchildren, Piper Weston, Silas Weston and Brooks Weston; sister-in-law, Beverly Pagan; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Jane Chapman.

Memorials may be directed to Hillside Christian Church, Doane University, Nebraska Christian College, Tekamah Care and Rehabilitation Center or Blair Area Community Band.
