Hilda Meeves, 96

Hilda Victoria Meeves, age 96 years, of Bennington, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at Brighton Gardens Home in Omaha.

Hilda Victoria Sandstrom Meeves was born on the family farm Oct. 1, 1922, near Mondamin, Iowa, to Victor and Minnie (Hansen) Sandstrom. As a young girl, Hilda was active on the family farm and learned to cook, garden, sew and quilt. She attended grade school at Herring country school and graduated from Mondamin High School in 1939. Hilda went on to study at Iowa State Teachers College, earning her teaching credentials. She was baptized in the Magnolia Lutheran Church. After her schooling, Hilda taught at Herring grade school. In 1942, Hilda traveled to California to work at the Ship Building Yards in the Hiring Hall for three years. Upon returning to the Midwest, she worked in Omaha for a construction company as the bookkeeper. Hilda married Wilfred Meeves on February 17, 1951 at First Lutheran Church in Omaha and they were blessed with three daughters: Kristi, Janet and Vicki. Hilda and Wilfred raised their daughters on their family farm north of Bennington. Hilda became a farm wife, enjoying cooking, gardening, sewing and helping Wilfred with the farm work. They enjoyed dances at Peony Park and Sokol Hall during their 48 years of marriage. Hilda was a loving, caring, hardworking woman who cherished her family. She raised African Violets, savored comfort food, a hot cup of coffee and dinner out at Surfside Club. Hilda could often be heard saying “Do the best you can”, in her reassuring way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Minnie; husband Wilfred and a grandson.

Hilda is survived by her daughters, Kristi (Pat) Hargis of Kingston, NH, Janet Hayes of Omaha and Vicki (Reid) Japp of Bennington; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ella Mae Maynard of Goshen, IN; and many relatives and friends.

Her visitation was October, 31st, 2018 at the funeral home, the funeral was held on November 1st at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, and her interment followed at the German Cemetery.
