Gehrk Services Held Saturday-Father of Eight Children, Native of Germany, Died March 2

Services were held Saturday afternoon at the Bendorf Funeral Home for Carl Gehrk, 85, long a resident of Washington County, who died last Wednesday afternoon at the home of a son, Henry, near Kennard. The Rev. Ralph P. Rasmussen of First Methodist Church was in charge. Clyde Sappenfield sand two hymns during the services, accompaniment being furnished by Miss Gertrude Mead.

Mr. Gehrk was born May 8, 1852, in Nystad, Schleswig, Germany, and came to America when about 19 years old. Several years late he sent to Germany for his parents, brother and sister, and they went to Portland, Oregon. From there they came to Nebraska, settling on a farm south of Kennard.

He married in 1880 to Dora Hager. She died July 4, 1900. Surviving Mr. Gehrk are five daughters, Elsie of Council Bluffs, Tena of Missouri Valley, Jennie of Dalton, Katie of Houston, Texas, and Bertha of Hooper; and three sons, Henry, Charles and Chris, all of Kennard. Fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Carl Gehrk was born May 8, 1852 in Nystad, Scholiesvig, Germany. He came to America when about 19 years of age. After a few years, he sent to Germany for his father, mother and brother and sister. They moved to Portland, Oregon where they lived a few years. They then returned to Nebraska and settled on a farm south of Kennard.

He was married to Dora Hager in 1880. Mrs. Gehrk passed away July 4, 1910.

He retired from the farm in 1917, and moved to Blair where he lived until 1934. Since then he has made his home with his eldest son, Henry.

He leaves 8 children: Elsie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Tena of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Jennie of Dalton, Nebraska; Katie of Houston, Texas; Bertha of Hooper, Nebraska; Henry, Charles and Chris, all of Kennard; and 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held last Saturday, March 5, at the Bendorf Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ralph P. Rasmussen officiating. Clyde Sappenfield, accompanied by Gertrude Mead, sang two hymns.

Interment was made in the Blair cemetery.
