Klassen, August J. 11/29/1939

August Klassen, a long-time and highly respected resident of this vicinity, passed away Wednesday morning, November 29, after an illness of only two days. Although he had been suffering for about a week with ear trouble it had not prevented him from continuing his work at Red Apple Farm, but Sunday night he fell into a comatose condition, from which he did not rally. Dr. Geesaman and an Omaha specialist were called, but the disease, diagnosed as streptoccus meningitis had made such headway that their efforts were unavailing. Mr. Klassen’s sudden death is a shock to all, for he had been in apparent good health and spirits. He was a reliable, industrious man of excellent habits, and his passing is a great loss, not only to his immediate family, but to the community. He was born in Luebeck, Germany, March 3, 1882, and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Klassen, came to Ft. Calhoun when he was six years old, and lived in this vicinity ever since, engaging in farming, and was for several years the janitor of the Ft. Calhoun school. He had been employed for several years at the Red Apple fruit farm south of town. He was married on March 15, 1911, and she with her daughter, Mrs. William Kay, survive him, as do two sisters, Mrs. Otto Asmussen and Mrs. Lena Benck. Two brothers of this vicinity, Chris and Henry, preceded him in death as […cut off…] in Germany. The funeral arrangements had not been completed at the hour of going to press. ~~~ Obituary courtesy of the Nebraska Washington County Genealogical Society.
