HERMAN WOMAN, 85, IS DEAD

Mrs. Christene Hugelman (*writer’s note – should be spelled Christine), 85-year old former Herman woman, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son, William Hugelman, at Wakefield, Nebraska. Known to many as Grandma Hugelman, she had been an early day resident Washington county. A complete obituary will be published next week.

Many Attend Rites For Mrs. Christine Hugelman

Among the many out-of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services for Mrs. Christine Hugelman, Friday, were Mrs. L. V. Ackerman of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Mrs. Bernard Reininger of Freeberg, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Driskell of Randolph, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Will Hugelman, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hugelman, Louis Hugelman and Adelaid, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Hugelman of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. William Hugelman and children, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hugelman of Wakefield; Mrs. John Horn, Dr. and Mrs. H. F. Quads (*writer’s note, this should actually be spelled Quade*), Minnie Fink, J. C. Was Pioneer of County; Survived By Many Friends

Funeral services for Mrs. Christine Hugelman, Washington County pioneer, were conducted at the Herman Baptist church at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, with Rev. A. W. Clarke of the Herman Methodist church officiating. Burial was made in the Herman cemetery.

Mrs. Hugelman, who died in Wakefield at the home of a son on November 12, was 85 years of age. She had been in poor health for some time and left her home in Herman a few weks (*writer’s note – “weeks”*) ago to enter a hospital and later visit the son, William.

As Christina Hecker, she was born at Fearmenten, Germany, on October 12, 1855 (*writer’s note – probably should be Viermunden, Germany*). She came to this county in 1863, living at New York, Bellville, Illinois (*writer’s note – should probably be Belleville, Illinois), and De-Soto. In 1874 she was married to Leo Hugelman, and they homesteaded a farm west of Herman until 1915when Mr. Hugelman passed away, the widow moving to Herman.

Surviving are two sons, William of Wakefield and Louis of Lincoln; two daughters, Mrs. L. V. Ackerman of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Mrs. C. S. Horn of Herman; a half sister, Mrs. George Huber of Bennington, and a host of friends.

MRS. HUGELMAN IS HONORED IN DEATH

Tribute Paid to “Grandma” Hugelman, 85, Herman, Buried Friday

The community of Herman paid posthumous tribute Friday afternoon to Mrs. Christine “Grandma” Hugelman, 85, for many a resident of the village, who died Tuesday of last week while visiting at Wakefield.

There was a profusion of flowers at the funeral services, held at the Herman Baptist church, with the Rev. A. W. Clarke, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers as interment was made in (the) Herman cemetery.

A group of Mrs. Hugelman’s friends at Wakefield contributed a sum of money which they sent in her memory to the Nebraska Children’s Home Society in Omaha.

Mrs. Hugelman had lived in or near Herman since her marriage in 1874. As Christine Hecker, she was born October 12, 1865 (*writer’s note - should be 1855), at Fearmenten, Germany (writer’s note – should probably be Viermunden, Germany). There she was baptized as a member of the Lutheran faith, to which religion she belonged her entire life. She and her mother and grandmother came to the United States when she was 12 years old and settled in New York. Later they moved to Belleville, Illinois, and still later Mrs. Hecker and daughter came to old DeSoto, in Washington County.

Christine Hecker and Leo Hugelman were married in 1874, and soon thereafter moved to a farm west of Herman, where they resided more than 30 years before moving into Herman in 1905.

Mr. Hugelman died early in 1916 (writer’s note – should be 1915). Three sons also preceded the mother in death.

Surviving the aged Herman woman are two sons, Will of Wakefield and Lewis of Lincoln; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Horn of Herman and Mrs. L.V. Ackerman of Klamath Falls, Oregon; and a half-sister, Mrs. George Huber of Bennington. There are a number of grandchildren.

#5 Mrs. Hugelman Services Held

Funeral services for Mrs. Christine Hugelman were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Baptist church, with rev. A.W. Clarke, Methodist pastor, officiating. Music was furnished by the male quartette, L.D. Long, C.R. Gray, Fred Robertson and Francis Forsberg, with Mrs. G.F. Lowe at the piano. Burial was made in the Herman cemetery. Pall-bearers were grand-sons of the deceased, Lloyd Hugelman, Billie Hugelman, Kenneth Hugelman, Willard Hugelman, Howard Hugelman and Willis Horn.

Christine Hecker was born at Fearmenten, Germany (*writer’s note – should probably be Viermunden, Germany), October 12, 1855, and passed away at the home of her son, Will, at Wakefield, Nebraska, November 12, 1940, at the age of 85 years and one month. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith while young and she remained true to her belief.

At the age of 12 years she came to America, accompanying her mother and grandmother. They located in New York. After some time they moved to Belleville, Illinois. She and her mother came west and settled at DeSoto. In 1874 she was united in marriage to Leo Hugelman. Soon after the young couple moved to a farm, where they resided for over 30 years. They came to town in 1905 where they resided till their death. Seven children, five sons and two daughters were born to Mr. And Mrs. Hugelman.

Mr. Hugelman passed away in January, 1915, and three sons preceded the deceased in death.

Mrs. Hugelman, a pioneer of this vicinity, was known far and wid; and by her kind disposition she acquired among her friends many children and young people who she loved. She was known to them as “Grandma Hugelman”; one ever ready to help them. She was a good wife, a loving mother and a friendly neighbor.

She leaves to mourn her loss, two sons, Will of Wakefield, Lewis of Lincoln; and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Horn of Herman and Mrs. L.V. Ackerman of Klamath Falls, Oregon; one half-sister, Mrs. George Huber of Bennington, Nebraska; other relatives and a host of friends.

In honor of this good woman, a group of friends of Wakefield, Nebraska, took up a collection of $9.25 and sent it to the Nebraska Children’s Society Home at Omaha, dedicating it to her memory.

Among the many beautiful floral offerings, some came from relatives and friends at Klamath Falls, Oregon; one from the Suburban League Auxiliary of that city, of which Mrs. Ackerman is a member.
