FORMER BLIR WOMAN DIES IN ITALY

Ed Matthiesen received a cablegram last week from his sister, Bertha, of the sudden death of his mother, Mrs. F. H. Matthiesen in a hotel in Merana, Italy. The death occurred Saturday, January 23.

The last letter Ed had from his mother and sister was while they were in Munich, Germany a few weeks previous, and Mrs. Matthiesen’s health was apparently good at that time. Mrs. Matthiesen and daughters, Bertha and Meta, went abroad three years ago and visited in many of the countries, stopping frequently at the Merana. Miss Meta returned to the United States several months ago, and visited in Blair enroute to Pasadena, California where she is making her home.

Mrs. Matthiesen was born at Ft. Calhoun October 17, 1857 as Emma Rohwer, and lived there until her marriage to F. H. Matthiesen in 1877. They came to Blair where F. H. was a merchant for many years. He died about thirteen years ago, and since then Mrs. Matthiesen and her daughters have traveled extensively, both in this country and abroad. On a previous trip to Europe, the oldest daughter, Anna, died at Monterey, Switzerland. Her body was brought to Blair for burial.

Mrs. Matthiesen’s body will be returned to Blair, probably around February 20 when funeral arrangements will be made.

The deceased is survived by her son, Ed, the two daughters, Meta and Bertha, two sisters, Misses Ella and Anna Rohwer and one brother, Harry Rohwer, the last three of Ft. Calhoun. Mrs. Matthiesen was the second oldest Washington county pioneer, the oldest is Nick Thone who was born in Blair a few months earlier.

MRS. F.H. MATTHIESEN DIES SUDDENLY ABROAD

Blair, Jan. 24-The second oldest Washington county pioneer, Mrs. F. H. Matthiesen, 74, died suddenly Saturday in a hotel at Merana, Italy, according to a cablegram received by her son, Ed Matthiesen, Blair capitalist. The body will be returned to Blair and funeral services will be held about Feb. 20.

With her two daughters, Misses Meta and Bertha, Mrs. Matthiesen had been traveling in Europe for three years. Meta Matthiesen returned a few months ago and is living in California. Another, daughter, Anna, died at Monterey, Switzerland, on a previous trip.

Mrs. Matthiesen was born at Fort Calhoun in 1857 and was married in 1877. Her husband, a merchant and banker in Blair, died 11 years ago.

Body Will Probably Arrive Here Early Sunday

Ed Matthiesen and his sister Miss Meta, of Pasadena, California, left for New York last Saturday to meet the body of the mother Mrs. F. H. Matthiesen, who passed away January 23 while on a tour in Italy. The body is expected to arrive in New York later today or early tomorrow after which it will be brought to Blair for burial. The body will probably arrive in Blair early Sunday and will be laid to rest in the Blair cemetery. A short funeral service will be conducted at the Blair cemetery.
