John Dulaney 86, Buried Wednesday

Took An Active Part In Politics During His 63 Years In County

John Dulaney, 86, resident of Washington county almost continuously since 1875, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha McManigal, on East Lincoln street at eight o’clock Monday, morning after being seriously ill three weeks.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Campbell mortuary. Rev. Ralph P. Rasmussen, Methodist pastor, conducted the rites. Also participating in the service was the Modern Woodman lodge, of which he had been a member since a short time after he became a farmer near Kennard.

Surviving are five children, Ben Dulaney, Newcastle, Nebraska, Mrs. Hattie McManigal of Walthill, Mrs. Bertha McManigal of Blair, Lyle Dulaney, Omaha, and Mrs. Mattie Bovee of Canada. All except Mrs. Bovee were present for the rites.

Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Francis, Omaha; Will of Arkansas; Archie, Harvey and Mrs. Belle Barkley, all of Illinois; Mrs. Lovia Cooper of Montana, and Nancy, of Canada. When he died Mr. Dulaney was one of four brothers and sisters past 80 years of age.

Mr. Dulaney was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, and came here as a young man from Illinois. A year later he was married and in 1876 he moved to a farm near Kennard, where he lived until coming to Blair.

Mr. Dulaney served two terms as police chief and for 12 years was superintendent of the Washington county poor farm. The date of his birth was July 3, 1852.

Intensely interested in politics, he was a staunch republican and never failed to take an active part in county political campaigns. He was especially interested in the local outcome of this month’s election, but shortly before election day he became unconscious and failed to revive sufficiently to be informed of the results.

His wife died December 2, 1930, and since then he had made his home with Mrs. McManigal.

Of unusually sturdy stock he had been ill only twice in his life and during his last illness he amazed doctors with his vitality. He had been unable to visit town for several weeks before his last illness.

JOHN DULANEY DIED MONDAY

John Dulaney passed away Monday, November 21, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha McManigal, after an illness of three weeks.

He was born in Lawrence county, Ohio on July 3rd, 1852. The following year the family moved to Illinois where he grew to manhood. In 1875 he came to Washington county, and the following year, January 11, 1876, he was married to Miss Belle Wilds; the Rev. Wymer, for whom Wymerville was named, performed the ceremony.

Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dulaney: Ben of New Castle, Wyoming; Mrs. Bertha McManigal of Blair; Mrs. Hattie McManigal of Walthill; Lyle of Omaha and Mrs. Mattie Bovee of Canada.

The wife died eight years ago, and since that time the deceased has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bertha McManigal of this city.

Besides the children he leaves thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren to mourn his death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Campbell Mortuary with Rev. Rasmussen of the local Methodist church officiating, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

Thus another early settler has gone to join that great band of hardy pioneers who settled the county. But few remain to bear witness of those early days; let us cherish and respect them.

Note: Born 3 July 1852 in Lawrence, OH; Married Belle Vilena Wild 11 Jan 1876; Died on 21 Nov 1938; Find a Grave # 36868615
