Howard Peter Hanson was born on December 17, 1918 in Monona County near Dunlap, Iowa, the third child of Hans and Mary Hanson. He grew up playing, working and living on the family farm and attended nearby country school until eighth grade. His formal education completed, he dedicated his time to helping his folks on the farm and playing for dances with his dad and brothers. The lure of better job opportunities caused him to move to California in early 1940 along with his older sister and brother-in-law; he found a job immediately as a valued ranch hand on movie director Victor Fleming’s hobby ranch and got to be a cowboy for a while. Later, Howard went to work fulltime at Consolidated Aircraft and, part-time, back at Flemings’ ranch, all in the Escondido area. After receiving his draft notice from the draft board back in Iowa, he returned and enlisted in the Navy in March, 1942. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Howard worked several different jobs to make ends meet for a young single guy.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Rule on January 13, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap. This marriage resulted in seven children. Howard moved his family to Omaha in 1954 where he started his long-time career with John Deere and Company. He became a widower in 1979 and married for a second time to Frances Rooney in 1981. Losing Frances in 2012, Howard pressed on as the devoted patriarch of his large and loving family. He loved gardening, playing cards, woodworking, and volunteering in all manner of community and religious service.

After a brief battle with pneumonia, he died at Methodist Hospital in Omaha on February 14, 2019 at the age of 100 years, one month and 28 days. God bless Howard and al those who mourn his loss.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Marjorie Hanson; second wife, Frances Hanson; sons, Byron and Dale Hanson; grandson, Logan Hanson; parents, Hans and Mary Hanson; siblings: Bernard Hanson, Lillian Dai, Marie Ulmer, Richard and Paul Hanson. He is survived by his children: Norman (Joyce), Gary (Lisa Spicka), Michael (Linda), Patricia Bradford (Michael Batty), and Robert Hanson; daughter-in-law, Sharon Hanson; brothers, Harold and Dan; 26 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
