Galloway, Rev. J.G. 3/5/1924

13 Mar., 1924 - The Tribune

The entire Kennard community was greatly shocked at the announcement that Rev. J. G. Galloway had passed away at 8:18 Wednesday evening. Every effort possible was made to prolong his life, but human hands could not keep him with us any longer, and he slept away in peace, having completed a long and useful life in the ministry. Funeral services were held from the M. E. church here Sunday afternoon.

Note: there is a tombstone marker identifying him as a Methodist circuit rider. “ On a typical ride once around the circuit, the rider traveled…"

The correct answer is 200-500 miles. Especially west of the Appalachian Mountains, circuit riders rode great distances between communities and congregations. They expected to visit each church on the charge at least once, and possibly start some new ones. At times, they preached every day. Some circuits were so large it took six weeks to complete one cycle. They traveled light, carrying their belongings and books in their saddlebags. Ranging far and wide through villages and wilderness, they preached daily or more often at any site available be it a log cabin, the local court house, a meeting house, or an outdoor forest setting.”—United Methodist Church online site
