Robert L. Burns, 83, of Fort Calhoun, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in Omaha.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun. There is no visitation. Interment will be in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery with military honors provided by Fort Calhoun American Legion Post No. 348.

Robert Leo Burns was born June 21, 1920 in Omaha to Benjamin and Mary (Brown) Burns.

On Nov. 16, 1940, he married Muriel Grace Hobday in Omaha.

Mr. Burns was a World War II veteran, serving with Company B, 776th Railway Shop Battalion.

In 1960, the family moved to Fort Calhoun. Mr. Burns was a welder with Eaton Metal before he started a 45-year career in the bricklaying trade. He worked in Omaha and in the surrounding areas in Nebraska and Iowa. During the winter, he traveled to warmer southern states to work.

He is remembered as being a "whiz" at crossword puzzles, and every night, for several years, he quickly solved the puzzles in the Omaha World-Herald.

Mr. Burns was a 44-year member of the American Legion Post No. 348 in Fort Calhoun.

He is survived by his daughter, Dixie Humphrey of Fort Calhoun; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jean Burns of Omaha, Tim and Annett Burns of Lincoln and Kevin Burns of Fort Calhoun; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel; sons, Robert and Paddy Burns; grandson, Todd Humphrey; brother, John; sisters, Mickey, Peggy, Pat and Dorothy.

MEMORIAL SERVICE- Sat. April 17th, 11 am, Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home. NO VISITATION. Interment Fort Calhoun Cemetery. Military Honors conducted by Fort Calhoun American Legion Post #348.
