Austin W. Burt, 10, of Herman died from injuries sustained in an ATV accident south of Herman on July 3, 2010.

Services were Thursday, July 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. Interment was in the Herman Cemetery.

Austin Wayne was born March 24, 2000, in Omaha, to Robert Wesley "Wes" and Lisa Irene )Hatton) Burt.

Austin attended Tekamah-Herman Community Schools at the Herman Elementary School He was a model student at school, and enjoyed his friends and activities. He was a member of Tekamah-Herman Cub Scout Pack No. 158. He loved his family first and was kind, loyal and devoted. His second love was his motorcycle. He also enjoyed climbing trees, fishing, boating, woodworking and watermelon.

He was a loving son, brother and grandson. He had a quiet, mild personality and was helpful, a hard worker and was grateful for everything. Austin planned to be an electrical engineer, and liked motors as well as building things with his hands.

He is survived by his parents, Wes and Lisa Burt; brothers, Tyler, Logan and Landon; sisters, Chelsey, Lacey and Marissa Burt; grandparents, Les and Pam Hatton and Bob and Gloria Burt, all of Herman; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Pelan Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

HERMAN BOY, 10, DIES IN ATV ACCIDENT

A 10-year-old Herman boy died on Saturday when an all-terrain vehicle he was trying to back up rolled into a ditch and on top of him.

The Washington County Sheriff reported that Austin W. Burt was driving the ATV on County Road 25 about 2 miles south of Herman when the accident happened. His 5-year old brother was a passenger on the ATV, but was not injured, the sheriff said. Neither boy was wearing a helmet.

The Herman Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad responded to the scene, as did the Washington County Sheriff. Austin was taken by family members to the hospital before deputies arrived.

Austin was the son of Robert and Lisa Burt of Herman. An obituary is on page 2A.
