Lena Matthiesen was born in Lepk, Germany June 30, 1874 and died July 22, 1929 at the age of fifty five years and twenty two days, following an illness of fifteen weeks' duration.

Deceased was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church when young, and followed its teachings all through her entire life. In 1894 she came to Washington county and on September 18, 1898 she was married to August Kahnk. To them nine children were born, eight of whom survive her as follows: Marie, Lillian and Clara, and Gustav, Louis, Harry, Albert and Arthur; also three stepchildren: Meta, Margaret and John, beside the husband and two sisters, mourn her death.

Mrs. Kahnk was widely known and most highly esteemed by those who knew her, evidence of which was shown at the funeral ceremonies held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the home when upwards of four hundred neighbors and friends gathered to show their last respects. The services were in charge of Rev. Carl Bader of the local Methodist church and the music was furnished by Miss Ethel Mead and Mrs. E. J. Hancock, and interment was made in the German cemetery ten miles south of Blair.
