Mr. Herman Kerkhoff died Sunday morning at the home of his son, August, northeast of here, after a short illness. He was 78 years of age. He is survived by one son, August, and one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Meier, his wife having preceded him in death a few years ago, and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Fontanelle church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Wm. Goode officiating. Interment was made in the Fontanelle cemetery. Mr. Kerkhoff was a resident of Fontanelle some forty-five years, having come here from California where he first made his home after coming from Germany.

Herman Kerkhoff Dies at Home Near Telbasta

Herman Kerkhoff, widely known Washington county farmer of the Telbasta neighborhood, died last Sunday morning at 1:30 o’clock after an illness of several weeks' duration. The deceased was born in Belefeld, Germany February 12, 1853, and came to America when he was a young man. He first located at Quincy, Illinois, and later came to Washington county. After a few years he went to California, but returned to this county 38 years ago. In 1891 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ruwe, who died four years ago. Mr. Kerkhoff was always active in the affairs of the community and was prominent in church affairs.

Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. E. T. Meier of Herman and a son, August Kerkhoff, living on the home place. There are also six grandchildren, a half brother living at Norfolk and a brother and a sister living in Germany.
