Herbert Franke, 81

Herbert Franke, 81, of Fremont, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in the A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont, with the Rev. John Ploman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation began Monday, and will also be held at the church, one hour prior to services.

Herbert Franke was born Jan. 22, 1921, on the family farm near Fontanelle to George and Wilhlmine (Kaempf) Franke. He attended and graduated from the Fontanelle School, then helped on the farm.

On Aug. 6, 1944, he married Alberta Otteman in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper. The couple began farming southeast of Winslow. In 1974, Mr. Franke’s health began failing, and they moved into Fremont in 1975. Later, they lived for a few years in Tempe, Ariz., then returned to Fremont.

Mr. Franke was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle, where he served on the church council. He was most recently a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church of Fremont.

He served on the school board of the Timpe School, and also had been on the board of the Winslow-Scribner Coop. He served on the Winslow Rural Volnteer Fire Department, was a member of the Dodge County Feeder’s Association and the Lutheran Brotherhood.

He is survived by his wife, Alberta; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeannine and Lynn Moeller of Hooper; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Debra Franke of Monson, Mass., and Timothy and Sandra Franke of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Franke of Fremont; a brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Janet Franke of Scottsbluff; and a step-mother-in-law, Sarah Otteman of Valley.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister, and two siblings in their early childhood.

Memorials are suggested to St. Timothy Lutheran Church.

Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
