OLD SETTLER ANSWERS CALL

Magnus Johnson, old settler of Washington county, passed away at his home on south street at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 8. He had been ill since before Decoration day, suffering from a severe attack of heart trouble which finally caused his death.

Deceased was born in Sweden in February, 1856, and when one year of age came with his parents to America, settling first in Omaha. In 1868 his father homesteaded out on the Papio in Washington county, and since that time this has been his home.

He was married to Miss Anna Anderson in 1882, and to this union eleven children were born, five of whom, with the aged wife, still survive him. During his younger years he was actively engaged in farming, of which he made a success, and laid by ample means to care for him and his family in his declining years.

While on the farm, he never shirked a civic duty, serving as director of the school in his district for a long term of years, and also as county supervisor for the county, and always filling the office in a conscientious, painstaking manner that won him the respect of his fellow men.

He left the farm in 1913, and moved to the home on South street where he passed away. Since moving among us, he has served the city very ably as mayor and left the office with honor to himself and to the satisfaction of the general public.

In is home life, he was everything that could be asked. A kind and thoughtful husband, a wise and loving father, setting an example well worthy of emulation. In his business career always upright and honest letting justice be his guide in all things, and in his official work in the different positions he so ably filled, always striving to do his best. In the death of Magnus Johnson, the community has lost a real man, and his loss will be greatly felt by those who knew his worth as a man, a neighbor and a friend.

Besides the wife, he leaves five children to mourn him: Mrs. Nellie Payne of Blair, Ida at home, and Emma of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Robert Foley and Lawrence Johnson of Blair, and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday at two o’clock p.m. at the Danish church with Rev. James Lund officiating, and interment will be made in the Blair Cemetery.
