#1-Printed in the Sept. 17, 1931 Pilot-Tribune, Blair, Nebraska Aged Herman Resident Dies Friday Mrs. Mattie Rose Came Here in 1875 Mrs. Mattie E. Rose passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.W. Burdic Friday evening, Sept. 11. She was born November 10, 1844 at Richmond, Indiana, and moved to Salem, Iowa with her parents in 1856. She was married to Solomon C. Rose at Salem December 31, 1860. They moved to Omaha in 1865. They came to Washington county during the spring of 1875 and settled on a farm six miles west of Herman where they resided for about 28 years until they retired in Herman in 1903, where she has made her home since. She and her husband were of the early pioneers of Omaha and among the early settlers of Washington County. Mr. Rose passed away September 16, 1908. Mrs. Rose is survived by two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Eugene W. Burdic of Herman, Mrs. Jessie Lackaye, Sterling, Illinois, Mr. George W. Rose and Eugene A. Rose both of Omaha, four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Camilla Elliott of Omaha, Mrs. Lillie D. Stewart of Omaha, Mrs. Delos P. Beard, Omaha, and Mrs. E.W. Caldwell of Sioux City, Mrs. G.W. Shields of Los Angeles, fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Burdic home, Rev. John Poucher of Omaha officiating. Mrs. Mattie C. Rose, 86, an early day settler, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. W. Bardic at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. She has been in failing health for some time due to her advanced age. Deceased was born at Richmond, Indiana November 10, 1844. She moved with her parents to Salem, Iowa in 1856. On December 31, 1860 she was married at Salem to Solomon Rose. In 1864 they located in Omaha, at what is now 16th and Douglas street. They came to Washington County in April, 1865. In 1875 they purchased a farm six miles west of here where they lived for 28 years. They left the farm and moved to Herman in 1903. Mr. Rose died Sept. 16, 1908. Mrs. Rose was a lovely character. She was a great reader, and it was a pleasure to visit with her. She was a charter member of the Womans Club, and was an active member, writing and reading her papers until less than two years ago. She is survived by two sons, George N. and Eugene A. of Omaha and two daughters, Mrs. Cora Burdic of Herman and Mrs. Jessie Lackeye of Sterling, Ill; fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; also four sisters, Mrs. G. W. Shields of Los Angeles, Mrs. M. Caldwell of Sioux city, Mrs. Lillie Stewart and Mrs. Camilla Elliot of Omaha and one brother, Deloo Beard of Omaha. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 o’clock at the E. W. Burdic home conducted by Rev. Boucher of Omaha. All of the children, her brother and sisters, except Mrs. Caldwell and Mrs. Shields, were here for the services. Many from out of town were also present. Burial was made in the Herman cemetery.
