MRS. W. H. UNDERWOOD

Hannah Marie Johnson was born in Christiansand, Norway April 24, 1869, and passed away June 28, 1931 at the Bryan Memorial Hospital of Lincoln, Nebraska. She had been in poor health for some time, and was forced to her bed June 7th, and later was taken to the hospital on June 23 where she underwent an operation for gall stones on last Thursday, from which she failed to rally.

She came to America with her mother in 1871, and located in Chicago just before the Chicago fire. They lost what little they had in that fire. When nine years old she and her mother went to Yankton, South Dakota, where they lived until her marriage to William H. Underwood January 15, 1888. Her husband was then the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Alpena, South Dakota, where they lived to two years. Here their first child was born.

In 1890 they came to Nebraska, living for a season at Schuyler. In 1891 her husband joined the North Nebraska Conference, and they were located at Springfield, Sarpy County, for five years. Then they lived in Papillion, Nebraska for one year. From there they went to Arlington. During the spring of that year, with the Spanish-American War coming on, her husband enlisted and helped organize Company “E” of Third Nebraska and was elected First Lieutenant. Afterwards he was Chaplain of the regiment. The home was maintained in Arlington until the war ended when they were sent to Maple Grove Church. After remaining there for three years, they’re appointed to Archer.

In 1905 they were appointed to St. Paul, Nebraska, remaining there seven years. In 1912 the Conference appointed them to McCabe Church at Omaha. In 1916 they were assigned to the First Church of Blair, Nebraska.

In 1919 Mr. Underwood was elected Superintendent, and Mrs. Underwood as matron of the Crowell Memorial Home at Blair, which station she filled for eleven years. This ended her active work. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood moved to Lincoln last September, and about a month ago moved to Beatrice where the daughter, Mrs. Hubka lives.

Five children came to bless this home: Clinton B. of Houston, Tex; Frances, wife of Wallace McCracken, Hamilton, Montana; Henrietta, wife of Lieut. William B. Anderson, U. S. Navy, Norfolk, Virginia; Lawrence W. of Chicago, and Thelma, wife of Ernest A. Hubka of Beatrice, Nebraska. Five grandchildren also survive.

She always did her work cheerfully, intelligently and willingly. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Beatrice at two thirty on Wednesday of this week, and interment was made in the Beatrice cemetery.

Those from Blair who attended the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Ruwe, Mrs. Minnie Triplett, Miss Esther Rasmussen, Mrs. Anna Parker, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Koopman, Chris K. Bendorf, Mrs. Oscar Guyer, Mrs. Harry Sappenfield, Mrs. Hugh Wright, Rev. and Mrs. George, Mrs. Meahen and Mrs. Crosby.
