BELOVED CALHOUN LADY PASSES

Many Washington county friends of the John Landis family of Ft. Calhoun were saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. John Landis which occurred early Monday morning, May 11, following several weeks' illness. Mrs. Landis had been gaining in health gradually, and only a few days previous to her death, the good news of her ultimate recovery was spread among her friends.

Mary J. Utterback was born near Crawfordsville, Indiana, at which place she spent her girlhood. She moved to Holton, Kansas with her parents where she was united in marriage to John A. Landis Jan. 1, 1884, and where they lived for a few years, afterwards moving to illinois.

They moved to Nebraska thirty three years ago, and have made Ft. Calhoun their home. The social and church life of the community was not complete without the presence and help of Mrs. Landis. She was an enthusiastic worker in any enterprise for good in the community, and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. She became a member of the Christian church in her youth, and adhered strictly to the principals of the Christian faith.

She is survived by her husband, John Landis, her daughter, Myrtle, Mrs. Henry Fischer, and her son Roy, and their families, living near Ft. Calhoun. She leaves also two brothers, Charles of San Antonio, Texas and Harmon of Holton, Kansas and a number of other relatives and many dear friends.

Mrs. Landis was one of the most progressive women of her community; sociable by nature, she loved to invite her friends to her home which was known for its generous hospitality.

She was a faithful and devoted member in the Order of Eastern Star and was a past matron of the local chapter. She was an active member of the Calhoun Woman’s Club, and loved the good and beautiful things of life. She was also a member of the Wilde Circle, a social organization, and attended the meetings when she was able.

For a number of years Mrs. Landis was Calhoun news correspondent to The Enterprise when the editors learned to love her for her many womanly virtues, and they feel a personal loss in her passing.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, May 13, from the Calhoun Presbyterian church with Rev. Baltzly of the Kountze Memorial church of Omaha officiating. Interment was made in the Ft. Calhoun Cemetery.

A wealth of floral tributes testified to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held by her many friends.

The relatives and friends present from out of county were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Barnett and daughter, Hazel, of Stanton, Neb., Sol Denny of Stanton and Mrs. Dan Daley of Omaha.
