#1-19 Feb., 1931 - The Enterprise

Another of the pioneer residents has passed from our community. Mrs. Christina Maria Schmidt was born April 19, 1849 in Schleswig, Germany and died at her home in Ft. Calhoun on Feb. 10, 1931 at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 21 days. Mrs. Schmidt came to America in 1868, and was married the following year to Peter Schmidt at Omaha. In 1870 they moved to a farm west of Ft. Calhoun and lived there until 1900. From the farm they moved to Ft. Calhoun and resided here until her children were born to this union, five of whom are dead. The surviving are Peter Schmidt, Jr. of Solway, Minn., Wm. Schmidt of Florence, Mrs. Mary Jahnel of Kennard and Henry Schmidt of Ft. Calhoun. She also leaves to mourn her 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides a host of friends.

Mrs. Peter Schmidt, Sr.

Mrs. Christina Maria Schmidt was born on April 19, 1849, in Schleswig, Germany, and died at her home in Ft. Calhoun on February 10, 1931, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 21 days.

Mrs. Schmidt came to America in 1868 and was married the following year to Peter Schmidt at Omaha. In 1870 they moved to a farm west of Ft. Calhoun, where they resided until 1900. From the farm they moved to Ft. Calhoun, residing here until her death.

Her husband preceded her in death two years.

Nine children were born to them, five of whom are dead. The surviving children are: Peter Schmidt of Solway, Minn.: Wm. Schmidt of Florence; Mrs. Mary Jahnel of Kennard; and Henry Schmidt of Ft. Calhoun. Fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also mourn her passing.

Mrs. Schmidt was one of the pioneer women of this section, and experienced the hardships and the joys of those early days. She was a good wife and mother and helpful friend and neighbor.

The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church this afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in the Ft. Calhoun cemetery.

She came to America in 1868 and was married the following year to Peter Schmidt at Omaha. In 1870 they moved to a farm west of Calhoun where they lived until 1900 when they moved to Calhoun. The husband died two years ago. Nine children were born to this union, four of whom survive her.

Surviving her are three sons, Peter Schmidt of Solway, Minn., William Schmidt of Florence and Henry Schmidt of Ft. Calhoun; and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Jahnel of Kennard. Fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive her. Funeral services were conducted from the Calhoun Presbyterian church last Thursday with Rev. A.F. Newell officiating, after which interment was made in the Calhoun cemetery.
