Buried in Arlington Cemetery

Arlington Rev. Herald 12 April 1923

Dell Oliver Springgate was born October 12th, 1844 in Davis County, Kentucky. When a boy he moved with his parents to Breckenridge County in the same State, where he grew up, and married Mary Margaret Legrand, Sept. 8th, 1869. To them were born six children, four boys and two girls. One boy, Arthur, died in infancy, and another, Forest, was drowned while swimming at the age of fourteen years.

Mrs. Springgate preceded her husband into the beyond on January 1st, 1908, since which time Mr. Springgate made his home with his son, Melville, with extended visits from time to time with his daughters. He came to Nebraska about nine years ago, and has always liked this part of the country, and this community in particular.

Although the natural infirmities of age were upon him he was in his usual state of health, and could get around quite well until last Thursday, when he was suddenly taken with an attack of heat weakness , and although put to bed and given every care, he never rallied. He suffered no pain, and was at best only partially conscious. Thus he passed quietly and peacefully away, Monday, April 9th 1928, at 1:30 p.m., at the age of 78 years 4 months and 25 days.

There is comfort to his dear ones in the knowledge that some twenty seven years ago he made a public profession of religion and became a Christian man.

The surviving children are Melville Springgate of Arlington, Nebr.; Mrs. Frank Haynes, of St. Louis, Mo; Dallas Springgate and Mrs. Charles mercer, both of Irvington, Kentucky. Besides these there have been eighteen grandchildren, of whom two died and five great grandchildren, of whom one died.

The funeral took place Wednesday forenoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church, the pastor, Rev. Frank Williams, conducting a short service of prayer at the home, prior to the fuller service, with sermon, at the Church. A mixed quartette sang sweet songs of hope and comfort, and many friends and neighbors were present to pay their last tribute of respect to one who has lived a quiet gentle life among us, and whom everybody esteemed. The ceremony of interment followed at the beautiful Arlington cemetery where, amid the spring resurrection of a new life all around, the tired body was laid until the time of universal resurrection and the life that is beyond.
