ELMER EUGENE BATES

Elmer Eugene Bates, only son of Charles and Nellie Hopkins-Bates, was born near Missouri Valley, Iowa Dec. 12, 1873, and passed away at his home in Blair, Nebr., November 17, 1932.

He was married Nov. 9, 1908 at Auburn, Nebr., to Emma Cunningham who survives, together with two daughters and one son; Mrs. Theo. Bates-Aye, Mrs. Audra Goltry-Longwell and Eugene Goltry, all of Blair; also three sisters; Miss Mary Bates and Mrs. Maude Haller of Chadron, Neb., Mrs. Elsie Skelton, Loveland, Iowa.

Elmer grew to manhood at his birthplace, being employed in the C. & N. W. shops, and for several years was a mail carrier. Later he became an interior decorator, and took great pride in his work. After his marriage he moved to Nebraska, and then to Tulsa, Okla. Three years ago, his health failing, he returned to Blair, being a great sufferer from diabetes. The bereaved have lost a kind and loving husband, father and brother.

Funeral services were held at the Bendorf Funeral Home at 2:30, Nov. 20, Rev. A. F. Newell of the Congregational church officiating.

ELMER BATES DIES AT HOME IN BLAIR

FORMER MAIL CARRIER IS VICTIM OF STROKE OF APOPLEXY THURSDAY

Victim of a stroke of apoplexy, Elmer Bates, who would have been 59 years old had he lived until December 12, died at his home on west Colfax street last Thursday morning a few hours after the attack.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Bendorf Funeral parlor, with Rev. A. F. Newell, Congregational minister, officiating. Burial was in the Blair cemetery.

Born near Missouri Valley, December 12, 1873, Mr. Bates grew to manhood there and for a number of years was employed in the Chicago & North Western Railway shops in that city. Later he became an interior decorator, a vocation in which he took great pride.

Following his marriage, November 9, 1908, to Emma Cunningham at Auburn, Nebraska, the Bates family located in this state, leaving after several years residence here for Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they lived until three years ago. Then, his health failing him, he returned with his family to Blair. He had been in ill health many years, having suffered from diabetes, but his condition had not been critical prior to the attack which took his life.

Surviving Mr. Bates are his widow, two daughters and one son. The children are Mrs. Theodore Bates-Aye, Mrs. Audra Goltry, Longwell and Eugene Goltry, all of Blair. Also surviving are three sisters, Miss Mary Bates and Mrs. Maude Haller, both of Chadron, Nebr., and Mrs. Elsie Skelton of Loveland, Iowa.
