SOPHIE MARIE GUTSCHOW

Mrs. Sophie Marie Gutschow passed away suddenly Wednesday morning at seven o’clock, the victim of a heart attack. She had been an invalid for over two years, but had been in better health during the present summer so that her death came as a real shock to her family.

Deceased was born in Mecklenburg, Germany March 20, 1862, and was thus past seventy years of age at her death. She grew to womanhood in the mother country where she married Joseph Gutschow. Immediately following their marriage, which was over thirty seven years ago, they embarked to America where Mr. Gutschow had already established himself in business.

Since the arrival in America, Washington County has been her home. Only one child, Walter, was born to them, who is well known in Blair business circles, and who has given his mother every attention, filling as best he could the place of the father who passed on some years ago.

Besides the son and wife, two grandchildren, Joseph James and Marylis Ann Gutschow are left to mourn her death, also two sisters in Germany join in the sorrow with the grief-stricken family.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the German Lutheran church of which she was a devout member, and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery where the body will be consigned to its last resting place beside the husband who has gone on before.

MRS. JOS. GUTSCHOW DIES SUDDENLY…HEART ATTACK FATAL TO WIDOW OF EARLY HOTEL OWNER

Mrs. Joseph Gutschow, widow of a pioneer Blair hotel operator and herself a resident of this city since 1895, died suddenly of a heart attack at her home on east Colfax Street at about 8:30 o’clock Wednesday morning, August 10. She was 70 years old.

Although Mrs. Gutschow had been almost bedfast for the past two years, her condition had not been considered critical and news of her death came as a shock to the community, particularly to the scores of older residents of this vicinity.

Mrs. Gutschow was born at Levin, Mecklenburg Province, Germany on March 20, 1862, and came to America and to Blair in 1895, shortly after her marriage. Mr. Gutschow, also a native of Germany, had been in America for many years previously and after establishing a prospering hotel business in Blair had returned to Germany to be married.

From 1895 until 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Gutschow continued to operate the hotel bearing their name here and in the latter year they retired. From 1910 until 1912, with her son, Walter, Mrs. Gutschow lived in Germany, but since 1912 she had made her home continuously in Blair. Mr. Gutschow died on April 13, 1924.

Funeral services are to be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock from the German Lutheran Church, of which Mrs. Gutschow was a lifelong member, with the pastor Rev. H.C. Jul. Frese, officiating and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery, beside the grave of her husband.

Surviving Mrs. Gutschow are her only son, Walter, and two grandchildren, Jimmy Joe and Maryliss. Two sisters in Germany also survive. They are Mrs. John Wiegard and Mrs. Carl Trerup, both of whom live at Dargun. A number of nieces and nephews in Germany also are numbered among her survivors.
