E.P. HANSON, OF HERMAN, DEAD AT 62

FOUNDER OF HERMAN STATE BANK SUCCUMBS IN OMAHA HOSPITAL

E.P. Hanson, 62 years old, native of Washington County and founder in 1907 of the Herman State Bank, died at 5:30 Wednesday morning in an Omaha hospital, where he had been confined for medical treatment for more than a month. From the time of its organization until his death Mr. Hanson had been president of the bank.

Mr. Hanson was born on a farm west of Herman on May 4, 1870, the son of H.V. and Anna Hanson, both natives of Sweden. The elder Mr. Hanson came to the United States as a poor young man in 1865 and after four years in Utah settled in this vicinity, purchasing an 80 acre farm near Herman.

For his first frame house the elder Mr. Hanson hauled the lumber all the way from Omaha but in the later years of his life this residence was replaced by a more commodious structure. At the time of his death in 1902, the elder Mr. Hanson was one of the county’s most influential farmers and was the owner of 720 acres of real estate.

E.P. was educated at rural and the Herman school and later attended a normal school at Fremont, being graduated at the age of 19. He farmed until he was 28, then beginning his business career by becoming a salesman for the Cudahy Packing company. Three years later he joined the Standard Oil company’s force and five years later resigned to become a special policeman during the exposition year in Omaha.

Then, in 1907, Mr. Hanson returned to Herman and founded the bank. Strict attention to business and undaunted faith in the Herman community, coupled with his inherent ability contributed to his prosperity and at the time of his death the bank he had directed for 25 years was rated among the strongest small town banks in Nebraska.

In 1901, Mr. Hanson was married to Miss Lucy D. Cooper, now deceased. To this union one son, Howard, was born. Mr. Hanson later married again and the widow and son survive him. As a fraternalist Mr. Hanson was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Knights of the Maccabees. Three sisters, Mrs. J.F. Peddleford, Miller, S.D.; Mrs. Swan Johnson, Lincoln; and Mrs. R.B. Wilson, Los Angeles also survive.

Rites are to be held at the Hanson home in Herman Friday afternoon, with burial in the Blair cemetery.
