COUNTY PIONEER DIES IN ARLINGTON

William Osterman, Sr., 79 years of age, and an early pioneer of Washington county, died in Arlington Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice Newcom.

Mr. Osterman suffered a slight stroke January 7 from which he only partially recovered, and about a week ago he became ill with the flu which developed into pneumonia.

He is survived by two sons, William Osterman, Jr. of Fremont and Harry Osterman of Arlington, and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Newcom, also of Arlington. One sister, Mrs. Samuel S. Dugan of Shawnee, Okla. also survives.

Private funeral services for the relatives only will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 1:30. The family requests no flowers.

WM. OSTERMAN, SR. DIES AT ARLINGTON…BECAME RESIDENT OF WASHINGTON COUNTY IN 1857

William Osterman, Sr. one of the real pioneers of Washington County, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice Newcom, at Arlington Tuesday afternoon. He suffered an attack of the flu some time ago and had been seriously ill since last Friday when his illness developed into bronchial pneumonia.

The deceased was born in Germany in May 1852 and five years later he came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Osterman, to America. The family came to Fontanelle and lived for one year in the log cabin home with the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sprick. The following year the family moved to the farm north of Arlington, which was known as the Osterman farm. In 1878 Mr. Osterman was married to Louise Ruwe and the couple lived on the Osterman home place until about ten years ago when they moved to Arlington. Mrs. Osterman passed away several years ago.

Mr. Osterman was one of the pioneers of Washington County and amassed a fortune both in Washington County lands and in city property. Besides his holdings in this county, he also owned the Terry Hotel property in Fremont. Surviving him are his three children, William, Jr. of Fremont; Harry and Mrs. Alice Newcom of Arlington; also a sister, Mrs. Mary Dugan of Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at the Newcom home in Arlington tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Members of the family announce the funeral will be private.
