Byerley, John W., 33

Died 19 November 1893 (date calculated)

Published in Blair Courier on 22 November 1893

Sunday afternoon the sad intelligence spread throughout our city that John W. Byerley was dead. To many it was a surprise while to others it was a long looked for event. He was born in Youngstown, Westmoreland county, Pa. February 9th, 1860. He was one out of six children, of which only two are now alive viz, George Byerley, who is well known in Blair as an industrious and moral young man and Donley Byerly, who lives in Pa.

Early in life John went to Rock Island, Illinois, to learn a trade. From there he went to Atchison, Kansas, where he resided for over four years and from there came to Blair about four years ago where he has since resided. August 30th, 1880, he was married to Miss Amanda Kelly, in Rock Island, Illinois. By this union they were blessed with three children, one boy and two girls, the oldest, which is the boy, is eleven years old.

He has been for some time foreman of the collar factory of this city and was very highly esteemed by all who knew him. He has been sick more or less for about four or five years, but no one seemed to think it very serious until about five weeks ago when it was evident to all that the dreadful disease of consumption was eating at the vital parts of his system. Physicians were summoned but could do but very little for him. Then he tried Christian science, but this also failed, finally he returned to medicine again, but nothing could hold him to this world. He was visited by several pastors of this city and gave evidence to all that his faith laid hold of the "Rock of Ages" and whether he lived or died, would love and serve his God faithfully to the end of life, and did so.

Just before dying about 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon he called the friends by name and said the angels were waiting for him and so, calmly and sweetly he passed over the river to that land where pain and suffering never enter, leaving many brothers in the "united Workmen, " and "Modern Woodmen" a large circle of friends, and aged father, two brothers and a loving wife with three darling children to mourn his loss. "Not lost but gone before."
