MRS. S. C. MATHEWS

Mrs. S. C. Mathews, early settler of Washington county, passed away last Thursday, Sept. 14th at the age of 89 years, 7 months. She was born near Leesville, Indiana, and was married in 1861, and later, with her husband, came to Nebraska settling near Blair where they continued to make their home until the death of her husband five years ago. Since that time she has made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Harry White of Omaha.

To Mr. and Mrs. Mathews the following children were born: T. L.; Henry; Edgar; Laura; Oscar; Etta; Atta; Burtis; Elmer; Maude and Myrtle. The husband, three daughters and one son preceded her in death.

The surviving members of the family are T. L.; Oscar; Mrs. Harry White; and Etta of Omaha; Henry of Winnebago, Nebr; Edgar of Kearney, Mo; Burtis of Nelson, British Columbia; 23 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mathews has been a member of the Baptist church since early girlhood.

She was a member of the W.R.C. for many years and took great interest in that organization.

She was also much interested in church and through the last years spent in Blair she and her husband attended the Methodist church.

Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. White in Omaha and from the Methodist church in Blair conducted by Rev. Jackson, and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.

FORMER BLAIRITE SUCCUMBS FRIDAY

MRS. SAMUEL C. MATHEWS, AGED 89, DIES IN OMAHA AT HOME OF DAUGHTER.

Mrs. Samuel C. Mathews, 89, former resident of Blair, died early Friday morning in Omaha at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Whit, where she had lived for the past five years, since the death of her husband.

As Lucinda Newkirk, she was born March 6, 1844, near Leesburg, Indiana. In 1861, she was married to Samuel Christopher Mathews. To this union were born the following children: T.H., Henry, Edgar, Laura, Oscar, Etta, Atta, Burtis, Elmer, Maude and Myrtle. The husband, three daughters and one son preceded her in death.

Mr. and Mr. Mathews came to Nebraska in the early days and made their home near Blair and later in Blair. Mrs. Mathews was always active in church work, in both the Baptist and Methodist churches. She was an active member of the W.R.C. for many years, taking great interest in that organization.

Surviving Mrs. Mathews are five sons, Henry, of Winnebago, Nebr.; Edgar of Kearney, Mo.; Burtis, of Nelson, British Columbia; T.L. of Blair and Oscar of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Harry White and Miss Etta Mathews, both of Omaha. Also left to mourn her departure are 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the home of Mrs. White in Omaha, and later from the Blair Methodist church, with Rev. W.H. Jackson officiating. Burial was made in the Blair cemetery.
