WORLD WAR VETERAN PASSES

Ira Bryant Woten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Woten, was born at Winterset, Iowa April 6, 1898. When a small child he moved to Nebraska where he lived near Decatur. Later the family moved to Whitman, Nebraska. On May 25, 1918 he entered the World war, enlisting at Valentine, Nebraska, and served nine months. He belonged to Battery C. 338 Field artillery. On January 17 1919 he received an honorable discharge.

He was married June 1, 1922 to Miss Goldie Martin of Walthill, Nebraska, and to his union two children were born: Ira Everett, Aged 12; and Belva Mardell, age 6. Following their marriage, they lived in Omaha where he worked as a street car conductor. They went from there to Norfolk where for fourteen years he was a first class fireman on the Northwestern railroad. For some time after this they lived on a farm near Walthill, and from there they moved to a farm west of Herman where the family now resides.

He has been in poor health for several years. On October 22 he was taken to the Veteran’s hospital in Lincoln where he passed away on Thursday, November 19. Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by his father, Hugh Woten of Walthill, three brothers, Lorin and Arthur of Macy, Nebr., Claude, whose address is unknown, five sisters, Mrs. Gilliland of Hastings, Iowa; Mrs. Peter Findley of Imogene, Iowa; Mrs. Lydia Martin of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Rose Spear of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Ethel Krohn of Clearmont, Wyoming.

His mother and one brother preceded him in death. Other relatives and many friends mourn his loss. He was well liked by all who gained his acquaintance.

Funeral services were held at the Legion hall in Herman Sunday, November 22 at 12:30, conducted by Rev. W. A. Clarke of the M.E. church. Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. C. E. Johnson, Miss Dagmar Olson, L.D. Long and C. R. Gray. Mrs F. B. Shrader at the piano.

Pallbearers were members of the American Legion. Later funeral services were held at the M.E. church at Walthill at 1:30 in charge of Rev. Clarke, assisted by Rev. Knott, pastor of the church there. The American Legion conducted their services at the grave.

A number of the local post accompanied the body to Walthill, and there was a large delegation from there present. Interment was made in the Walthill cemetery.
