ONE KILLED IN AUTO CRASH TUES.

Fails to Make Corner. Car Leaves the Grade. One Killed

THREE ARE INJURED

Again the automobile has chalked up another victim on its long list of victims. This time it is William Kubie, Jr, living about nine miles northwest of Blair. William, riding with Elmer Thone, Jr., were on their way Tuesday morning to Herman where they were attending the Herman High school. With them were James Thone, aged 10, and Ila, Aged 6. The elder boys were intending to drop them off at the home school and then proceed to Herman.

Driving southwest from the Elmer Thone farm on a downhill road, the turn of the road south, which they wished to take, was an elevated grade. At the corner the car left the road and turned over. The little girl, Ila, was apparently catapulted through the windshield and landed far out in the adjoining field, badly scratched and cut, but not seriously hurt. William Kubie was also thrown from the car which struck him, tearing away the entire top of the head. He was dead before help could reach them.

The other two boys, James and Elmer, were badly shaken and slightly scratched, but not injured. The car was also badly smashed.

Mrs. Thone, the mother of James, Elmer and Ila, is a patient in the Immanuel hospital in Omaha where she is being treated for heart trouble, and fearing the effects of the terrible shock, Mr. Thone immediately took the family to her.

This sad event was a shock to the entire community, and the neighbors and friends did everything in their power to show their sympathy for both families.

William Kubie had been an invalid for some time, and had suffered serious operations leaving him a cripple. He had an exceptionally bright mind, and was ambitious to get an education. His death, coming as it did, was a severe shock to his family and the grief-stricken parents are heartbroken.

SCHOOL IN HERMAN CLOSES FOR RITES

William Kubie, Jr., Aged 15, auto victim, buried Thursday

Herman high school was closed last Thursday afternoon while students attended funeral services at the Baptist Church there for a classmate, William Kubie, Jr., 15, fatally injured two days before in an automobile accident while on his way to school with a friend.

The Rev. Thomas J. Reese of Blair officiated and six youths, friends of William, served as pallbearers. Interment followed in Herman cemetery.

The youth was killed last Tuesday morning when a car in which he was riding, driven by a neighbor boy, Elmer Thone, Jr., 16, overturned on a curve west of Herman. Elmer and his younger brother and sister, James and Ila, escaped with minor injuries, but William had received a bad head fracture. He died on the road 20 minutes later as a doctor tried vainly to save him.

A resident of Herman all his life, William was born near Herman July 31, 1921, and had only recently celebrated his birthday with his family. He was graduated from the eighth grade at Brodersen rural school, later attending Hill Creek rural high school for two years, where he was an honor student. At the time of his death, William was in the junior class of Herman high school. He had been a member of the Brodersen Union Sunday School.

Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Kubie, his sister, Gertrude, three brothers, Kenneth, Raymond and Harvey, two aged grandmothers, one of them living in Europe, and other relatives.
