JAMES MATTHEWS PASSES AWAY

Funeral services for James Matthews, well known and highly respected resident of this county who died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Wachter of Herman, Tuesday, August 11, were held Thursday afternoon of last week at the Baptist church of that city, Rev. T. J. Reese of the Baptist church at Blair had charge of the services. Mrs. F. B. Shrader, with Miss Mildred Swanson, accompanist, sang two numbers.

Six of the deceased grandsons were pallbearers. Interment was made in the New England cemetery.

James D. Matthews was born April 7, 1857 near Hartsville, Indiana, and departed this life August 11, 1936 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Wachter, at Herman, Nebraska, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 4 days. He came to Nebraska in the fall of 1879 locating on a farm six miles west of Herman. The greater part of his life was spent near Herman.

He was married to Linda J. Fletcher on August 5, 1880, and to this union four children were born, one infant daughter and his wife preceding him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing one son Harry of Wood River, Nebraska; two daughters, Ethel, Mrs. Ben Wachter, and Edna, Mrs. Elmer Thone, both of Herman. Eight grandchildren besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

For the past ten years he has made his home with his daughters near Herman. He has been in failing health for two years, but he was always cheerful, never complaining of his suffering.
