VETERAN HERMAN PUBLISHER DIES

Harry L. Swan, 74, for eighteen years publisher of the Herman Record, died Wednesday, June 10, at an Omaha hospital. He had been in failing health for several years. After disposing of his paper a year ago, he went to Los Angeles, Calif., returning to Omaha two weeks ago. Before going to Herman he had been connected with the Associated Press in Omaha for twelve years.

Surviving are his widow and four sons: Ernest of Omaha; Robert of Arnold; Harry, Jr. of Stapleton, a former Burt county Herald employee, and Herrick of Billings, Montana.

The body was taken to Herman Wednesday afternoon, and Masonic funeral services were held there Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

VETERAN NEWSPAPERMAN, FORMER HERMAN RECORD EDITOR, DEAD

Harry L. Swan, 76, former editor of the Herman Record, died yesterday in an Omaha hospital. He had been in failing health for several years.

After dispensing of his Herman paper to Alfred O. Sick, publisher of The Pilot-Tribune, about two years ago, he retired and with Mrs. Swan spent much time in Omaha and Herman. Last winter the couple went to California. They returned only a few weeks ago, since which time they had been in Omaha.

Before going to Herman to fulfill his ambition of editing a weekly newspaper, Mr. Swan was a veteran city newspaperman. For 12 years he was a member of the Omaha bureau of the Associated Press and still had many friends on Omaha newspapers and news associations.

Surviving the former Herman editor are his wife and four sons, Ernest of Omaha, Robert of Arnold, Nebraska, Harry jr of Stapleton and Herrick of Billings, Montana.

The body was taken to the Truhlsen undertaking parlors at Herman yesterday afternoon. Tentative funeral arrangements, revealed just before noon today, were that they would be held, probably at the Herman Methodist church at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. R.B.E. Hill is to officiate.

In the presence of a large throng of relatives and friends, funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Herman American Legion Hall for Harry L. Swan, 76, former editor of the Herman Record, who died last Wednesday in an Omaha hospital.

The Rev. Thomas J. Reese of the Blair Baptist church officiated, being assisted by the Rev. R.B.E. Hill, pastor of the Herman Methodist church. Pallbearers were Ben Wachter, Alfred Jespersen, Gordon F. Lowe, James VanHorn, August Peppmiller and Claude Clements. Burial was in Herman cemetery, with Masonic rites.

Mr. Swan was long a member of Landmark lodge No. 222, A.F.&A.M. of Omaha, serving as its secretary for many years. Members of the lodge attended funeral services in a body.

Mr. Swan was born August 23, 1859, at Lincklaen, New York, and spent his boyhood there. When a young man he moved to Missouri and was married May 18, 1886, to Miss Sarah A. Herrick.

Entering newspaper work, he served continuously in that field until retiring two years ago. For 23 years he was member of the Associated Press staff in Denver, Chicago and Omaha. Leaving the daily news field, Mr. Swan owned several weeklies before purchasing the Herman Record and was its editor and publisher for many years, until ill health caused him to retire in 1934, at which time the Record became the property of Alfred O. (Sick?), Pilot- Tribune publisher.

Mr. and Mrs. Swan spent the past winter and spring in California and observed their golden wedding anniversary there, May 18. They had returned to Omaha only a few weeks ago.

Surviving Mr. Swan are his wife and four sons, Ernest of Omaha, Robert of Arnold, Harry Jr. of Lincoln and Herrick of Billings, Montana. Three daughters preceded their father in death, two in infancy and one during the flu epidemic of 1919 in Herman.

Mr. Swan was long a member of Landmark Lodge No. 222, A.F. & A.M., of Omaha, serving as its secretary for many years. Members of the lodge attended funeral services in a body.
